Writing

I combine my work as a therapist with my personal interest in creative writing, and I am currently studying for a PhD looking at life writing as a therapeutic tool.

Writing as part of therapy

I see creative or reflective writing as a useful adjunct to therapy, and if you like, we can look at opportunities for you to write about your thoughts and feelings between sessions. Reflective writing is a bit like journalling – it doesn’t have to be beautiful work! Writing can give you a space to reflect on something that is on your mind, and sometimes getting your thoughts onto paper (or your computer) feels like a release. If you are interested in getting more creative, we can play with writing stories or poems – but our work isn’t about teaching you to write or improving your technique – in this context, writing is just the beginning of a therapeutic conversation.

My work

My essay, ‘We All Fall Down’, which is about my strange attachment to Didcot Power Station, has recently been published by Little Toller Books as part of their anthology of essays on place, Going To Ground. To read more about the book or buy a copy, you can go directly to the Little Toller website: https://www.littletoller.co.uk/shop/books/little-toller/going-to-ground-an-anthology-of-nature-and-place/

My academic essays on life-writing, and particularly looking at grief and bereavement and intergenerational trauma have been published by Routledge in academic books and journals.
